8th October 2012 - Diary of a local business owner

Paul Swift

"What did you do recently?" Well if you asked Nick Gaskell from Gaskell Motor Bodies in Great Harwood, it sounds like this; Organised a Stunt driving event for local businesses to raise money for charity, ran the local 10k to raise some more, then arranged and held another Far mers Market event to raise even more cash, Oh and won runner up in the uk 'Bodyshop Of The Year' Awards.

Farmers market

Gaskells Motor bodies are not your typical car repairer and this Sunday Nick held a Farmers Market where over 30 local small businesses set up their stalls in Nicks' bodyshop, 4 local car dealers supported the event and over 500 people attended and helped Nick raise over £630 for the East Lancs Hospice with more to come in.

Farmers market

Nick stated "Helping the Hospice is something we have done for some time and running a Farmers Market also helps the whole community. We had many different food stalls, cars and crafts on show from the local area including Chorley Group, Greenacre Honda, Simpsons Skoda and Toyota Vantage. Along with the 'off road driving experience' raffle prize donated by local Car Dealer 'Hillendale Group'.+ a one weeks gym membership donated by The Dunkenhalgh spa and leisure centre, we raised another healthy amount for the Hospice'.

During his normal working day Nick and the Team at Gaskells repair accident damaged cars, which keeps Nick on his toes, but to ensure his legs were working OK, Last Sunday Nick ran the Preston 10k helping raise over £3000 for another local charity Carers Central.

Just another week in the life of a local businessman.

Paul Swift3rd September 2012 - Blackburn Motorsport Event - What A Night!

It took 6 months of planning, many phone calls, e-mails, and late nights of hammering Twitter and Facebook with write ups, photos and posters, but on Friday night everyone's hard work was rewarded with a fantastic night of motoring demonstrations at Darwen Services on the M65, all in aid of the East Lancashire Hospice. The event, organized by Gaskell Motor Bodies of Great Harwood, with support from health and safety expert Chris Knagg and promotion from Lisa Wroe at, boasted an auto test course, some seriously nice cars on display, food and drink stalls, sweets, cakes, raffles, music and of course the star of the show, Top Gear stunt driver Paul Swift, with his amazing car control.

The fun began just after 5pm with the Under 17 Go Motorsport team showing their skills on the autotest course that they had mapped out. Their displays were very impressive, surely some future motorsport champions were here on this charity night. As a former multiple British Autotest Champion, Paul went for a ride round the course, accompanying one of the youngsters, before deciding he wanted a crack at it himself. So, with me beside him in his much bigger Ford Focus, we slid in and out of the cones and spun round the course, all great fun and quite slippy due to the constant light rain.

The main event wasn't far away now, and as Paul and his team put the cars in place the crowd got into position for the first of the 2 shows. Rally MC, Bob Milloy, was the man on the microphone and he introduced Paul, who began by doing a J-Turn, or reverse spin, between 2 parked cars, belonging to some of the event's sponsors. The louder the crowd cheered, the smaller the gap became, and you really did wonder how he got the car through at the end! This was followed by a reverse parking manoeuvre, which involved driving up at speed then doing a handbrake turn to face the opposite direction, and sliding into the parking space. Next up was the parallel park, a Swift speciality: quite simple really, just spin the car neatly into an extremely small space! The "parked" cars were supplied by local dealers who looked a little worried at times, it has to be said! Then Gary from A1 Storage got his moment in the spotlight when Paul got him to sit in the boot of one of the parked cars as he spun into the space! He didn't even flinch, brave man!

Dance routine next, where Paul does a choreographed "car dance" set to music, and for this he needed a dance partner. The ride was auctioned off to the highest bidder, who certainly wasn't disappointed! It's fantastic to watch, and Paul gets breathtakingly close to the cars he dances around. Last up was Paul's party piece: driving a standard Ford Focus on two wheels. Being a passenger in this is a crazy and amazing experience, and once again the rides were auctioned off, all money going to the charity. Bob on the microphone was bundled into the boot for this one too, much to the amusement of the crowd! It's spectacular to see, and even better to experience.

The stunt show was repeated later in the evening, again with more money being raised by offering passenger rides. It certainly was a night to remember, and everyone we spoke to was very positive about the event. Jane from Ellison Printing, one of the supporters of the event and winner of a dance routine passenger ride, said: "My family and myself thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Paul's driving was astounding, how I'd love to parallel park like him! I couldn't help but bid for a passenger experience: we whizzed round parked cars, forward and backwards, spinning round one way, then the other. It would be fair to say I felt a little green when I got out of the car, but I'd had great fun! What an amazing night. Thanks to all concerned, especially Gaskell Motor Bodies who organised the whole event."

Lesley Walsh from Wheel Repair Centre, who was a passenger on two wheels, commented: "Lucky, lucky me! Fantastic night at the Blackburn Motorsport Event."

Rik Kirk, organizer of Rico Rally, said: "A great turnout for the community, who were amazed by Paul Swift's skills, showing support with their donations. A great night."

Gillian from V Ceptor CCTV added: "Fantastic event, had a great time. Huge thanks to all involved in the organisation, well done."

A great night it certainly was, and we couldn't have done it with all the sponsors and supporters! In no particular order: Chris Knagg ("Paul Swift added precision to the East Lancashire Hospice fundraising drive. Fantastic collaboration and teamwork from all involved"), Evans Halshaw Blackburn ("Was very impressed with Paul, could have watched him all night"), Ciceley Mercedes ("Was a great night enjoyed by all, looking forward to the next one"), Fatjax Chutneys ("Amazing! Fantastic car control, cracking night"), Coffees To Go ("People did say they enjoyed it"), The Ginger Baker ("What a fantastic way to raise funds for a charity"), The Sweetie Den (" Great night, really enjoyed it"), Porcus People, Ice Cream Dub, Wren Training, Expression Cakes, Greenacre Honda (Ben commented "More worried calling the boss if it went wrong! Ha ha no need to worry the guy has skills" ! , Chorley Nissan( Both Helen and Jason from Nissan Burnley really loved the event and came along with their families, Marshall Mercedes Benz, Blackburn Fire and Rescue, Blackburn and Darwen Police, Kays Traffic Management, Radio Lancashire, Bee Radio, Dave from Drystone Radio, Paul MJM Associates, AAA Vehicle Recovery, Dimitris Gatis, Shane from Lancashire Valeting, Gary from A1 Storage, Jane from Ellison Printing, Lesley from Wheel Repair Centre, Aquarius Acoustics, Chris from Fire Pro, Zed from Junction 4 Truck Park, Questmead Motorsport Suppliers, Supertune Paints Oldham, The Under 17′s Go Motorsport Team, and of course the hugely talented Paul Swift and his team.

Nick Gaskell, organiser of the event, hit the nail on the head with his comments. "An event, a social gathering, were friendships are formed. The Blackburn Motorsport Event certainly did that." It also promoted safe driving in Lancashire with help from Blackburn Fire Service, and the under 17 Motorsport Club.

And finally, from myself at thank you to everyone, it was a brilliant night of fun, friendships, fantastic driving and car control, all for a good cause. I loved every minute. We raised around £1200 for the East Lancashire Hospice and we couldn't have done it without every one of you.
